ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION:

The Schroeder Institute is a multidisciplinary research organization focused on high-risk, high-reward research to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use in the United States. We have established strategic programs of intervention and policy research; generated high impact publications; competed for extramural funds with a growing research portfolio; convened strategic conferences to identify critical research priorities; disseminated findings to research, practice and policy audiences; and established a dynamic training program for the next generation of tobacco control scientists. Our research approach capitalizes on and extends traditional academic research by incorporating rapid prototype development, iterative testing and refinement throughout the intervention development lifecycle. A major focus of research conducted at the Institute is to leverage the enormous power of technology to both conduct research and deliver evidence-based smoking cessation interventions to large populations, targeting both traditional web as well as newer social networks and mobile applications, including GIS.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies at the American Legacy Foundation has an immediate opening for a Data Scientist. The position offers excellent opportunities for professional growth in a stimulating research environment, collaborating on both new research initiatives as well as analysis of existing, large, and complex datasets from a number of previously completed research studies.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for managing large datasets

Oversee the development of datasets for analysis

Provide statistical analyses for multiple projects including multiple logistic and linear regression, longitudinal analysis, hierarchical models, and survey analysis.

Conduct analyses in large-scale real world data sets.

Conduct statistical analyses as required for grant proposals, manuscripts, scientific presentations, and other projects.

Prepare tables, charts and graphs to summarize the results of these analyses.

Assist in the preparation of peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Work as part of a small development group to build, test and deploy several overlapping product lines including a Facebook application, a text messaging platform, and mobile applications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates should have a master’s degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, or related fields. A master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, applied mathematics, or related field may be sufficient if all appropriate statistical coursework has been completed, or a combination of extensive statistical training and experience is evident.

Candidates must have 3-5 years experience managing and analyzing data for research and evaluation purposes as well as experience managing large datasets; experience with data management and data analysis is preferred in the area of behavioral sciences. A non-exclusive list of other statistical fields we are interested in include: time series, spatial statistics, social networks, parametric and non-parametric tests, understanding of supervised and unsupervised statistical learning algorithms, and Bayesian statistics.

Advanced skills/experience with programming and data management, along with knowledge of statistical research methodology/principles is desired. Proficiency in R essential. Experience in programming languages such as SAS, STATA, Matlab, other data mining tools, databases, object-oriented programming and data mining/machine learning is desirable. Good command of SQL. Demonstrated aptitude and willingness to learn new science, software applications and tools as needed.

High level of organization and attention to detail. Ability to summarize/interpret complex analyses, strong deductive reasoning skills, and ability to maintain detailed documentation of data management and programming work.

Superior communication (oral, written, & technical), time management, and project management skills are a must.

This individual will work, communicate ideas and results of analyses with multiple investigators & researchers of various backgrounds and must work well in a team environment.
