Full-Time Data Analyst in survey design and quantitative fisheries
SLU Aqua is looking for a data analyst in the field of survey design and quantitative fisheries. The position is a two year position based in Lysekil.
Duties: Our main task at SLU Aqua is to collect data and make quantitative analyses of fish stocks and fisheries. An important component of this work is the design of research surveys and data collection programmes for commercial fisheries and the estimation of population parameters using the data collected. Quite frequently this work involves regional coordination with other countries in the region. You will integrate in the sampling design and data analysis team at the institute. Your main duties, in collaboration with the team and with other national and international institutes, will be to refine and develop samplings designs for different kinds of fish and fisheries related data, including research surveys, to develop R-scripts that process, compile and estimate data for delivery to national and international clients and to assure the quality of those analyses and compilations. You will also participate with analysis in regional coordination initiatives and ICES Expert Groups dedicated to catch sampling and survey design. The results are expected to be compiled in scientific publications and reports. The work is done in close collaboration with other staff in the institute as well as colleagues in other institutes and will require a certain amount of trips away from home.
Qualifications: We are looking for someone with strong quantitative skills and that is able to handle large datasets. Good knowledge of statistics and simulations and programming skills in R (or equivalent) are required. MSc degree (or higher) in IT, mathematics, statistics or marine sciences is also a requirement. Previous work in marine biology, fisheries and/or population dynamics is favorably considered but is not a requirement. You should be able to quickly familiarize yourself with the new problem areas and identify key issues. You should also have a very good ability to interact with others and to create, maintain and develop contacts between various national and international actors. We highly value if you already have an established international network for the relevant subject. We expect you to have a good ability to work independently and in groups. You need to speak and write fluently, in English. If you do not yet speak Swedish, you are expected to start learning the language shortly after you begin your position.
