The newly established Asian Demographic Research Institute (ADRI) at Shanghai
University includes an international migration pillar. A post-doctoral researcher with
a background in statistics is sought to conduct research and teaching within the
pillar. This advertisement is part of a wider call for faculty positions:
Job description:
The research assistant will perform advanced statistical modelling to investigate a
range of international migration patterns including, global migration flows, moves
within Asia and the composition of non-Chinese populations in Shanghai. He/she
will develop and apply new methods for quantify past international migration
patterns, monitor current trends and predict future flows, working in close
collaboration with other scholars in the international migration pillar. The researcher
will contribute to the preparation of publications for peer-reviewed journals, present
results at conferences and perform some minor administrative tasks.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in statistics or a related field such as
economics, demography, geography or sociology with a significant quantitative
component. Expert knowledge of statistical methods is essential and experience with
either modelling migration patterns, demographic methods and/or Bayesian statistics
is desirable. The applicant should have excellent analytical and computer skills with
experience in statistical software (R) and ideally some knowledge of a more general
computer language (such as C, C++ or Java). A high level of English is necessary.
Conditions of employment:
Remuneration follows the Shanghai University scheme, amounting to an annual
gross salary of RMB 100,000-120,000 depending on experience, plus an apartment on
campus. Numerous funding opportunities exist for Chinese, returning Chinese and
non-Chinese scholars to supplement their salary. The position will be located in
Shanghai and open for a period of two years, with the potential for further extension
or progression.
Start of contract:
Flexible starting date, from April 2016 onwards
