For our section paleoclimate dynamics at the Alfred Wegener Institute we are looking for a
PostDoc (3 years)
focusing on extreme events, weather and climate patterns on synoptic up to a thousand-year time scales.
Background and tasks:
We expect the project to evaluate the long-term evolution of variability modes and their link to synoptic events, extreme values on long time scales and the mechanisms of the causes of abrupt climate change.
The successful applicant will contribute to research in the framework of our topic `The Earth system from a polar perspective’. Within the framework of the project, you evaluate seasonal variations and extremes by means of instrumental, proxy and model data. We analyze the variability of atmospheric blockings under different climatic background conditions, and develop suitable tools (preferentially in R) for our purpose.
- PhD in physics, mathematics, informatics or related fields
- Experiences in the analysis of time series, especially in R, Rstudio, Rshiny
- Abilities and interests in the interdisciplinary work of earth system research
- Very good command of English spoken and written
- Good knowledge of dealing with computer software
- Teamwork and interest in (inter) national cooperation

The position is limited to 3 years. Depending on your qualification and the tasks assigned to you, the remuneration is possible up to remuneration group 13 and is governed by the collective agreement for the federal government (TVöD-Bund). The place of employment is Bremerhaven. AWI wishes to recruit a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate/Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The post is available from 01 September 2017, or a mutually agreeable date thereafter.
