Job Description

We’re seeking an effective R and/or Python developer to provide data processing, storage, and analysis support to water resource engineers at the Philadelphia Water Department’s Office of Watersheds (OOW).

The OOW is a national leader in innovative stormwater management planning and policy. Its signature “Green City, Clean Waters” project aims to bring the city of Philadelphia into compliance with the regulatory obligations of the Federal Clean Water Act, while maximizing the City’s return along economic, environmental, and social dimensions. The selected candidate will work on a small team developing software to meet the ever changing data needs of engineers and scientists developing hydrologic, hydraulic, and hydrodynamic models of the Philadelphia watersheds and conveyance system.

Required skills and experience
– A Bachelor’s degree in Civil\Environmental Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field
– Experience with R or Python
– Excellent written and oral communication skills
– Experience with software version control using Git
– Experience using Regular Expressions
– An awareness of the importance of writing well-documented and maintainable code
– A passion for writing elegant code that employs best practices

Additional desirable experience
– Background in Hydrology/Hydraulics, Oceanography, and/or Storm Water Management
– Modeling with the US EPA’s Storm Water Management Model
– Mapping and spatial analysis with R and/or ArcGIS
– Working with Linux (Ubuntu Server) shell commands
– Relational database management systems (Preferably PostgreSQL)
– Amazon Webservices’ EC2
– Webdevelopment (HTML/CSS, Javascript, JQuery)
– Octave/Matlab
– Background in statistics
