I graduated as a physicist, and worked for 12 years in experimental physics mainly doing computer simulation and data analysis. But afterwards I quit academia and worked first as business/software/scientific analyst in the development of revenue management software for airlines, later as quantitative developer in the financial sector, and now as data scientist.
