Full-Time Data Analyst

Overview: The Freshwater Trust, a non-profit leader in stream and river restoration, is seeking a Data Analyst with a strong technical background. This full-time position will work with other members of the Science Team to support the quantification of environmental and water quality benefits from a diverse range of watershed, instream, and habitat restoration actions. The Data Analyst will also work with members of other functional teams at The Freshwater Trust, including habitat restoration, flow restoration, and monitoring. The Data Analyst will report to the Science Director.

The Data Analyst must be a creative self-starter who is able to work in a dynamic, innovative, and fast-paced environment that will be frequently responsible for conducting independent research and analysis. The ideal candidate is someone excited by new challenges and who enjoys finding creative, useful solutions to address complex problems. The Data Analyst should have an understanding of water resources, but more importantly, the candidate is someone excited at the prospect of solving complex problems with data, models, and a bit of elbow grease.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with other members of the Science Team to model and track environmental and water quality benefits from a wide range of stream restoration and conservation actions
  • Design, implement, and maintain tools and systems to support information feedback loops staff can utilize to increase the effectiveness of conservation and restoration programs
  • Assist with analyses and develop methods to automate workflows
  • Conduct independent research and analyses to characterize water quality improvements associated with conservation practices
  • Effectively communicate findings to a wide range of audiences, from technical experts to the general public

Skills and Qualifications:

It is not expected that candidates will have all of these skills

  • Education or experience in one or more of the following fields: mathematics, statistics, computer science, ecology, natural resources, water resources
  • Experience with scripting to automate analyses and workflows
  • Data management expertise, including developing and implementing database schemas
  • Experience cleaning and manipulating large, raw datasets and extracting relevant information to enable modeling or analysis
  • Ability to conduct independent research and data analysis
  • Proficiency with data visualization techniques
  • Strong analytical skills, with a focus on identifying gaps and finding solutions
  • Experience with water quality models or hydrological modeling
  • Proficiency with GIS and remote sensing technologies
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an open-office, team environment
