 Your task : Participate in the development of a web-based tool for sustainable and personalized dietary guidelines

 

Introduction to the company

Innovative firm, founded in 2014 by Matthieu Maillot, PhD and Florent Vieux, PhD, MS-NUTRITION provides a triple expertise in Modeling, Statistics and Nutritional Epidemiology in the context of research projects in food sciences.

MS-NUTRITION offers its clients, research centers and food companies, studies and R&D services on the following themes: food consumption analysis, estimation of the nutritional quality of foods, exploration of the different dimensions of sustainable diet (health, culture, socioeconomic, environment). At the same time, MS-Nutrition carries out its own R&D by developing new methodologies (e.g. web tools, questionnaires, data analysis approaches) further in order to better address public health issues. Presently, MS-Nutrition is composed of four researchers specialized in nutrition, public health, sustainable food and diet modeling.

 

Missions of the internship

MS-NUTRITION wishes to expand its web applications (using R Shiny technology) portfolio with the development of a simple tool offering 1/ an estimate of the sustainability of the user’s diet and 2/ consumption guides (food frequencies) to improve the sustainability of his/her diet, taking into account his/her dietary preferences (e.g. vegetarian), age, weight and physical activity level. The interface will be dynamic and will allow the user  to modify food quantities and simultaneously visualize the impact on the environmental impact and nutrition (step 1). The consumption guides for each profile (step 2) would be previously defined by the optimization approach developed by MS-NUTRITION. The objective of the internship is to develop the web interface for the selection of the user’s profile and the display of the results.

Your main tasks will be the following:

  • Build  a specification for the tool.
  • Develop the tool with R Shiny.
  • Test and deploy the tool  (deployment on the MS-Nutrition server with Shinyproxy and docker).
  • Occasional participation in other web tool projects within the team

Ideally, the web application will be in the form of an R package. You will have the supervision needed to complete your internship, both in terms of skills and human resources.

How to Apply

Qualifications We are looking at a Master Student in Computer Science or related field, with a specialization in the development of web applications. Experience in the usage of R and Shiny is required. Knowledge in docker, SQL databases and server management would be a plus. You wish to discover the functioning of a research and consulting firm and be involved in missions essential to the company’s success. You demonstrate a sense of initiative and ability to analyze and synthesize data. You are rigorous, motivated and have good interpersonal skills.   Terms Minimum 4 months, to be filled from Mars 2023. On the site of the Faculty of Medicine La Timone, Marseille, FRANCE.
