Job Description

We’d like to alert you to a new position posted on USAJobs for an early career interdisciplinary aquatic scientist at our EPA Office of Research and Development, Atlantic Coastal Environmental Sciences Division in Narragansett, Rhode Island.  Our well-equipped facility is recently renovated and a dynamic place to conduct forward-thinking, applied research on environmental concerns in a beautiful, coastal location.

 

We’re looking for an individual to develop , maintain, and apply data intensive research approaches to support management of small to regional watersheds and associated water bodies, creating data sets, models, analyses, and decision support tools to enable effective environmental management of complex problems. This person will contribute as a member of a vibrant research team, conducting independent and collaborative research.  We anticipate that this new hire will:

·    Support innovative data intensive research to integrate and evaluate water quality in the context of other biogeophysical characteristics of watersheds and associated streams, lakes, or coastal marine and relevant anthropogenic stressors

·     Create data sets, models, and related analyses to support decision making and effective management of environmental problems.

·    Apply various skills within data science, including data assimilation and management, statistical analysis of spatial data and time series (e.g., using SAS, R, Python, ArcGIS), solving optimization problems, applying watershed and other models, Bayesian statistical analysis, implementing machine learning and related computationally intensive data analysis methods, and creating user-oriented data visualizations, dashboards, and other interfaces (e.g., R Shiny apps) as appropriate.

·    Incorporate approaches for robust decision-making under uncertainty as well as communicating uncertainty around estimates, predictions or other results that contribute to decision making.

  • Interact extensively with intra- and inter-Agency personnel to build partnerships and develop research teams for interdisciplinary problem solving
